Plasma monitors - hugh saving possible on monitors compared
to TV's.
Most plasma models will be produced in a monitor version aimed
at the commercial market, and a television version aimed at the
consumer market. Typically the plasma monitor version will retail
for $500 - $1000 less than the equivalent television version.
Retailers are able to sell plasma monitors at this lower price
because they normally come without
- speakers
- a NTSC tuner
- a stand
- as many video input options
- an on site repair warranty
- a FCC Class B certificate
Many consumers opt for the less expensive plasma monitor because
they already have components in their home theater systems that
make the missing options irrelevant.
For example, they have
- a sound system
- an NTSC tuner in the form of a STB or VCR
- they will be opting for a wall mount
- their video inputs match up
Warranty coverage is the same except that repairs are carried out
in a repair center for a plasma monitor as opposed to on site for
a plasma TV. Many customers use the savings in the price difference
to purchase a better extended warranty.
Plasma monitors come with FCC Class A (commercial) certificates
which have less stringent limits on electromagnetic emissions than
FCC Class B (residential) certificates. This means there is more
chance your plasma monitor will interfere with other electronic
equipment in your home, but is usually not an issue.
Of course without all this extra gear a plasma monitor is lighter
and slimmer. They also may have extra display options, and have
enabled, functions such as auto power off, that are required in
the commercial world.
A competent plasma retailer should be able to address any concerns
you may have if you are considering availing of the savings offered
by going the plasma monitor route.
