Plasma screens - a new technology offering exciting new options.
Plasma screens have conquered the commercial world and as prices fall, are steadily capturing market share in the home theater and home entertainment markets. If prices continue to fall at their current rates it will become more and more likely that if you are in the market for a large screen display anytime in the near future, a plasma screen will become one of your front-running options.
Currently there is not much not to like about plasma screens except for their price. Some of their attractive features are
- a range of screen sizes from 32" to 63". A screen to suit rooms of every size.
- screens as shallow as 3".
- 160° angle of view, everyone in the room gets a perfect picture.
- clear, bright picture with millions of colors for color realism viewable under all lighting conditions
- 16:9 aspect ratio, the same ratio movies are made in.
- fast pixel response time, excellent for fast movements on the screen.
- flat screens, no distortion around the edges and uniform screen brightness.
- lightweight, hang them anywhere.
- Universal display capability, accept any video or computer format you throw at them.
Unlike regular TV's, plasma screens offer a multitude of options, which at first may seem bewildering but, which allow you to configure the perfect display for your viewing and budget requirements.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
The above comments were written some time ago when the average price of even the most basic 42 inch plasma was in the $2500-3000 region. How times have changed, check this out, a 42 inch plasma monitor for less than $1000.
UPDATE OVER
Plasma Screen Options
Television or monitor
A plasma television should include speakers, tuners and a mounting option so that it works straight out of the box the same as a regular TV. The less expensive monitor has none of these but you can utilize audio and tuning equipment, such as a STB, you already have in your home theater setup.
Resolution
Choose between ED (Enhanced Definition) and HD (High Definition) resolution. Resolution is a product of the number of pixels horizontally and vertically expressed in a ratio such as 1024x768.
ED has a pixel array of 852x480 and gives superb results if you are primarily a digital TV and DVD viewer.
HD has a minimum pixel array of 1024x768, different manufacturers producing different arrays. HD gives fantastic pictures and sound if you are or expect to be a HDTV viewer.
Mounting
Perhaps the most appealing feature of a plasma screen, hang it on a wall like a picture, plonk it on a stand or fix it to a cart with a DVD player and roll it wherever it is needed in the home.
